Qualifications for Apprenticeship, Residential & Sound Programs
 
  • High school graduate or have a GED. (copy of GED required)
  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Have two semesters of algebra (high school or college) with a minimum grade of "C" in each semester
  • Be a resident of the jurisdiction of Local #176 for one year (Zone 1: Will and Grundy counties; Zone 2: Kankakee and Bureau counties, and parts of LaSalle, Iroquois, Ford Stark, Putnam and Henry counties)
  • If selected, have acceptable physical health as determined by a physician, to be able to safely perform the tasks of a construction electrician, including drug testing
  • Must attend and pass mandatory JATC math class before being accepted into program.  Book deposit required.  Deposit returned if not accepted into program or applied to books fees if accepted.  No fees for class and no payment for attending.

Steps required to apply for program: 

    1. Applications will be taken on the second Monday of every month at the Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee facility, between the hours of 9:30 - 11:30 and 1:00 - 5:30 pm. A copy of a valid driver's license will be taken at this time
    2. Submit a copy of your birth certificate.
    3. Submit a copy of your GED, if applicable.
    4. You must have your high school furnish this office with an official transcript, including attendance. For other education and training to be considered and evaluated, (college, vocational and technical) you must have schools provide official transcripts. TRANSCRIPTS MUST BE MAILED DIRECTLY FROM THE SCHOOL! A DD214 will be accepted for military training from the applicant.
    5. Upon request, submit proof of residency, examples, driver's license, school records, and utility bills.
    6. If selected for the program, candidate must provide proof of a successful physical examination, and will be required to pass drug-screening examination
    7. Items 2,3, and 4 need not be resubmitted if you are reapplying and have previously submitted them. Check with us to see if that information is with your previous file. Any additional school transcripts since your last application should be sent to us.
    8. $25 Processing Fee - Money Order Only - Non-Refundable

Steps 2,3,4, and 5 must be completed by 4:00 pm, the last day in May and November and all qualifications must be met before you will be considered for an interview. NOTIFICATION AFTER ALL DOCUMENTS RECEIVED- After all documents and test results are received and evaluated by the committee, you will be notified by mail that you have been granted an interview or that you do not meet the basic requirements for an interview. NOTIFICATION FOLLOWING ORAL INTERVIEWS: After all qualifying applicants are interviewed, you will be notified by mail whether you were or were not selected for the program. Selections are made in descending order. All notifications will be made by mail after the closing dates of May 31 and November 30. You must notify this office of any change of address.

If you successfully complete all steps required with your application you will be eligible to take an aptitude test. Tests scores range between 1 and 9. With a qualifying score on the aptitude test you will be eligible for an oral interview. After the oral interviews, each applicant will be ranked and placed on an eligibility list in descending order. 

CHANGE OF ADDRESS: Information concerning the status of your application will be provided only by mail; therefore, you must notify this office of any change of address. ON-THE-JOB TRAINING: Work to provide training required in all of the counties covering the jurisdiction of IBEW Local 176 listed above. Apprentices are subject to transfer from job to job anywhere in these counties. RELATED CLASSROOM TRAINING: Related classroom training is mandatory. Classes will be held a minimum of one (8-hour) day every two weeks year round.
